6th Grade Science Teacher

I was born and raised in a family full of Mustangs. I was never able to experience that part of life because I grew up in Buena Vista, CO…home of the Demons! I heard stories throughout my life about life as a Manitou Mustang…I always felt a little left out. I left Colorado to attend Concordia University in Austin, TX and had an amazing experience. From Austin I took a job in Chattanooga, TN where I was a youth minister and 7th and 8th grade teacher for 5 years. Finally, I found my way back home to my favorite place on Earth and taught 1st grade at Woodmen Hills Elementary last year. I am very excited to finally be part of the Mustang family and start leaving my own fingerprints on this long family tradition. Email Nathan Johnson

Noli Morath

6th Grade Language Arts

I grew up in the small Iowa town of Keokuk, overlooking  the Mississippi River.  I attended St. Mary’s College in South Bend Indiana; as an English major I was also interested in foreign languages and cultures, and my favorite college experience was to  live and study during my junior year in Rome, Italy. After graduation, I came West for an adventure and ended up  in Gunnison, CO. I lasted until February, when temps routinely reached -24 Fahrenheit as I walked to my waitress job every morning! So I moved to the east coast – Boston — and while working, also attended the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, because I wanted to  study painting, drawing and printmaking. During that 3 years, I met my future husband, Steve. He has been a fine art painter for the past 30 years. As a 4th generation Colorado native, he really missed Colorado, and so when we married, we moved to back to his home town area. We have lived in Manitou Springs ever since. Before becoming a Manitou School District teacher, I was a Mustang parent. All four of our children attended Manitou schools, K through 12. When my youngest daughter entered MSES preschool I began working for the district. That was 20 years ago. This is a wonderful town and community and we have an incredible school system that reflects this community. I am grateful and proud to be a part of it!

Dan Sieck - SMARTE Teacher
Dan Sieck

SMARTE Teacher

Student focused, project based and real-world relevance are the top three reasons Dan Sieck finds teaching the SMARTE Design Classes at Manitou Middle School so rewarding. A teacher since 1985. Mr. Sieck holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership. He is also Nationally Board Certified, a distinction held by only 3% of teachers nationwide. Currently, Dan teaches MythBusters, Chess, Robotics, and SMARTE Design (making stuff in the name of science). Instead of spending their time sitting in chairs, taking notes, and spitting back answers, students are fully engaged and actively working in self-directed, self-paced groups completing activities that stimulate the brain and help them think. As a result, they get to experience first hand what science can do for them and what they can do for themselves and others through science. Students hone their skills in Mr. Sieck’s chess class while improving critical thinking skills, pattern recognition. respect, and perseverance. Chess has also been shown to improve memory, reading and math skills.

Art Teacher

Hello, My name is Denise Stageman. I have been the Middle School Art Teacher at Manitou Springs Middle School since 2002. Until the the mid-nineties when I moved to Colorado Springs, I lived in the following places: Texas, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Washington, South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Germany, Seychelles ( Indian Ocean!). I love to travel and learn about new cultures, but I also have fallen in love with Colorado and consider it my home. I am married to Dan, have two grown daughters who live in L.A., and two shaggy Labradoodles. In my free time my husband and I work on refurbishing our home in Monument. We enjoy hiking, reading, playing chess, travel, music, and (of course) art. I attended the Universtiy of South Carolina, University of Maryland, and Auburn University. I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Art and my Master’s degree in Education. Since 1985, I have considered myself an artist and an ongoing art student in a variety of media including painting, ceramics, sculpture, fiber arts, crafts, and most recently digital arts. I love being an artist and experimenting with new ways to express myself creatively. I am even more passionate about sharing the joys of being creative with others, especially children. My goal is to help everyone I meet realize that they too, can and should find a creative outlet to uncover and express their unique and wonderful voice and vision. The visual arts, my arena, is just one mode for creative expression, but any field or endeavor can be a creative outlet. We are all born with amazing potential to be creative, but many people have the belief that creativity and any type of artistic expression is just for those people who are talented. This wrong belief keeps a lot of people from even attempting to try new things.

Claudine Huntington - World Language Teacher
Claudine Huntington

World Language Teacher

I was raised in Berkeley, California, with a father who was a professor of history and law at the university, and a mother who was a French teacher at the local elementary school. Every three years, my father took a six-month sabbatical research leave in England or France, and one of us three siblings would be sent to live with the French family. I have traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Caribbean, and Japan when I was younger, and I spent a year of college at the University of York in England, where I studied history and Latin. I graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a degree in European history, and I have had some years of instruction in French and Latin in both high school and college. For twelve years after college, I pursued a career in college publishing, where I became both a sales representative and field editor for several large publishing companies. After the birth of my two girls, I acquired my Master’s Degree in Education in 2005, from the University of Phoenix, and have taught in a couple of other schools until I came to the Manitou Springs School District. World language is an area of teaching that enables me to bring so many pieces of my life experience together. Language and culture are so intertwined, and I truly understand this firsthand. This will be my fifth year teaching in the middle school, and I also taught one year at Ute Pass Elementary. My husband, who is a varsity high school softball coach, and I have lived in the mountains of Colorado for twenty-four years. Both of our girls are four-year college softball athletes. One is a doctor of physical therapy living in Idaho, and the other is finishing her senior year in college, and headed to graduate school in the field of speech pathology. The Colorado Mountains are our family inspiration, from the ski slopes, to fly-fishing on the rivers, to kayaking, and to hiking with our two small dogs.

to Idaho in 1993 to attend college and then to Oregon when he graduated college and went to work for Intel. Oregon, which I love, is where we vstarted our family. We moved our 3 kids to Colorado in 2007 and all attend district 14. I worked as a sub para for 3.5 years and then had the opportunity to work full time at MSMS. I am proud to say that I am now officially a Manitou Mustang.

Custodian

Lonnie (Lon) Glover is a proud Colorado native having grown up on a farm east of Pueblo. I spent 33 years with King Soopers doing mostly building maintenance, retiring in 2008. Faced with a career change, and with my experience being in building maintenance, the school setting seemed like a good fit. I worked in District 11 for three years and moved to District 14 in 2011. I feel at home here, D14 is like one big family. In my off time I enjoy time with my wife, our kids and grandkids, and spending most weekends in our RV enjoying beautiful Colorado.

Custodian

Hi. I am Peter Stickler. I came on staff at MSMS in 2006, and I am blessed to have the job as Night Custodian. I am a Colorado native and have lived in the Colorado Springs area my entire life. Prior to working for Dist. #14, I was a Civilian Contractor for the U.S. Government. During that time, I had the privilege of working with many very interesting top government officials and diplomats. One of the highlights of that period was the honor of assisting in Homeland Security in the Colorado Springs area. My hobbies are quite varied. I enjoy reading, movies, science, summertime, being with family and friends, Herpetology, Herbal Medicine, and collecting teaware. My favorite beverage is Green Tea with peppermint. I care deeply about people, especially children, and I strive to treat others the way I would like to be treated.
