Meet the Principal

Lawrence, Tyler

Dear MSMS Families and Community,

It is an honor—and a true joy—to welcome you to a brand-new school year at Manitou Springs Middle School (MSMS)! Whether you’re returning or joining us for the first time, I’m thrilled to have you as part of our Mustang family.

As the new principal of MSMS, I step into this role with deep gratitude and a clear commitment to the mission that drives our work every day: to be a safe school advancing the best teaching, the best learning, and a sense of belonging for ALL. This mission guides every decision we make; it reflects my personal belief that school should be a place where students are not only educated, but truly known, uplifted, and pushed to grow.

Our theme this year—Manitou Mustangs: Driven to Excellence—reflects more than academic achievement; it’s about how we show up as learners, leaders, and people. We're building a culture where students are empowered, engaged, and excited about their growth, both in and out of the classroom. At MSMS, we are committed to developing critical thinkers who learn how to think, not what to think—students who can ask thoughtful questions, wrestle with complex ideas, and approach the world with curiosity and confidence; this includes strengthening their relational capacity: learning to communicate well, collaborate effectively, and build meaningful relationships that will serve them for life.

I bring to MSMS eighteen years of experience in education—as a high school pre-AP English and information literacy teacher, district instructional coordinator, and most recently, assistant principal of nine years at Harrison High School. But more than anything, I bring a passion for building meaningful relationships and helping students and staff thrive. My wife and I—along with our four children, three attending Ute Pass Elementary and one starting at MSMS this year—are grateful to be part of this vibrant community and are excited to grow alongside you.

Throughout the year, you’ll find many opportunities to engage with MSMS, whether through events, celebrations, volunteering, or simply staying connected. I truly value our partnership with families and look forward to learning from and with you.

Thank you for trusting us with your children. Let’s make this a memorable, meaningful, and Mustang-strong year.

Warmly,
Tyler Lawrence, Principal Manitou Springs Middle School
